Scroll down to heavy equipment as cargo. It has to do with the default WLL of tie downs. Each securement strap must have a default WLL limit of 2,268 kgs (5012 lbs) A 4 inch strap only has 1,810 kgs(4000lbs) So in order to meet the default WLL of tie downs for securing heavy equipment, you have to use chains.

Today I picked up my new dump trailer to replace the equipment trailer I hauled the skid-steer on. My question is do most of you that use dumps to haul skid-steers tie them down? My trailer is a Big Tex 12LX, there are no tie downs in the bed. I will probably be adding them. On the equipment trailer I secured it with DOT chain and binders.

If you use one chain on the back and 2 binders you split the weight rating on the chain in half. So lets say you put one chain thru the back of the machine you are carrying. Tie one end off to a D ring and take the other end that is sticking thru the tie down point on the machine and attach that to one end of the binder. I use 5/16" on skid steers, 3/8" on larger stuff plus have some short 1/2" pieces for tracks. Use ratchet binders because pull binders can get you. DOT here requires 1 chain per 10,000lbs plus one (ie. 40,000lb machine requires 5 chains) plus you must chain down attachments such as blades and buckets and usually uses the plus one chain required.
