On larger machines like medium wheel loaders you can connect Cat ET to the machine and change the new (0 hours) service meter to whatever hours the former service meter had. You can't reduce the hours before anyone asks, only increase them.

We have put 10000 hours on Kubota engines. As you said maintenance and how hard it was worked is the big thing Bigger skid steers (like bigger tractors) can go longer hours. Personally I wouldn't buy one with over 2500 hours on it. I'm sure the motor is fine, but it's all the little stuff (hoses, connections, joints, etc) that just starts eating you alive.
