Ideally, running airless tires would be the best solution if your going to have them on for any length of time. That of course will at 3k or more to the cost of running them, but I agree that especially in slippery conditions like hilly, snow covered areas.
I add a min cost of more per hour for a CTL over a a wheeled skid. (I do not run OTT's anymore) The reason I switched from OTT's to a CTL was simple convenience. I got tired of the problems you have with OTT's. One problem I hated was changing a flat tire, take off the tracks, fix tire and put tracks back on. That was a major pain. I have used a Cat 236B skid steer that had over the tires track for over 2000 Hrs and the chains were still good. Of course the oils were changed on schedule and the tracks not kept too tight. Some other skid steers have broken chains that were small for .

I recently put OTT tracks on and think for general ranch type work a wheeled machine with OTT's is the best of both worlds. I will admit a track machine would be nice but the cost of operating one is not worth it to me. I can take the tracks on or off in about 30 minutes. I really on need them when its wet out. I have to install a raised filter bed septic system for my new home. I have access to a 2wd backhoe, mini ex, and a bobcat S150 skid steer. Would it be worth while to invest in a set of over tire tracks for the skid steer or will I need an actual tracked machine to get the job done. Over the tire tracks are such a hassle. I had them on an LS170 i was using. The paddles that keep them on the tires kept popping the tires off the rims and then taking the tracks on/off was a 45 minute project each time. The rubber pads are held on by two 1 and a half inch bolt which isnt sturdy whatsoever. They would always fall off.
The VTS system will have much more traction on slippery surfaces then any tracks over tires will. The VTS system applies more even weight distribution. With the Track over tires the tracks between the tires have no weight pushing them down on the ground so that part of the track is not as useful as the parts that are under the tires.
I just got off the phone with Loegering, inquiring about this very topic. Track kits, NOT the over the tire tracks, start at ,600 for mid-sized skid steers, and go up to ,600 or so for the big Gehl 7810. so for larger Cats and such they must be a tad lower in price.
