The downside for a skid steer (for me) is getting in and out. If a short, quick job, then one gets a good workout in the legs and knees crawling in and out of a skidsteer. Much rather step up onto the platform of a tractor with FEL and forks to move material. My tractor with loader I've been using around the mill is no end to handy but just doesn't have enough muscle for lifting packs of lumber. As such I'm looking for a skid steer but don't know how big of one to get. My tractor has a working limit of about 1,200 lbs on the forks.
A skid steer with bucket and forks will be the most usable piece of equipment you could have with a small sawmill. Unless it is in need of thousands of dollars in repairs, you will wonder how you ever got along without it. A wheel loader is the best for heighth, but the skid steer has it all over the wheel loader (CAT 910 in my case) for speed. I put 5' forks on my skid steer or CTL (Compact Track Loader) and it will walk all over in deep mud with a full load of hardwood logs. I do a ton with forestry (mulching, sheers, spade, tree puller). I also do a lot with minor dirt work, augers, fencing, etc. I’d call my skid steer needs: >50% forestry. Skid steers are vital for forestry work, offering agility and power. We have an AGCO-ALLIS 4660 with MFWD (around 54 hp) and front loader that we use for everything - including mowing and such around the farm. Skid steers are a very versatile platform but in no way compare to a machine like yours for sawmill chores. Yeah its fun to turn on a dime but the fun stops when you realize half the machine needs to be taken apart to find and tighten a leaky hose. It all depends--- Is the ground soft and wet, can your skid loader lift 3500 lbs. will your tree puller stay in one piece, is the operator bound and determined to get it out? If all of the answers are yes you can pull a lot of 8 inch or bigger trees.
